sound
From the beginning of our trailer the sound starts off by being tense and quiet; however it builds in tension when the antagonist begins speaking. There is a low drone sound and we have edited this to be an anxious sound. This will imply to the audience that the killer is being introduced.
There are several ways we could have used sound. We could have challenged conventions by using counterintuitive music like jazz music, which wouldn't have had a great effect because of the nature of our film - a unique character that does not conform and does not seem sane. This is in opposition to Churchdown's 2015 BUTCHERED, which made use of a jazz song to play against the expectations of its viewers and to emphasise that there is something wrong.
Instead, we chose to use multiple long-lasting sound effects, alongside tense music, in order to create the background music for our trailer. The first sound you hear is a hollow, empty wind noise. This demonstrates that the killer who appears onscreen is alone, either with you or with another victim. This can be used in horror because facing a force greater than you is not a particularly good situation and therefore one often used in horror. The high pitched whine that is introduced partway through when things start speeding up is indicating a change into action rather than anticipation. The use of brass instruments was implemented to indicate a change - whether from one scene to another or from life into death. The clock ticking halfway into the trailer is used to emphasise that time is running out - just like any other horror film, there will be blood shed and it is not a question of if but when.
We have done this to further affect the audience like we have said that the sound starts off being tense, we had also said that we have edited the low drone sound for it to become an anxious sound. The way in which we have edited the sound will leave the audience to feel uncomfortable due to the added affect that this adds to what they are watching as it makes them expect something to happen building up tension within the audience and anxiety will leave them on edge and more frightened with what they have watched.
We have also used the sound of crows during the two scenes where they are leaving from the tree we have done this for the reason to link it all together so we have used this sound to link back to the first time that we had used this sound, this is to imply to the audience that it is all ending where it began creating an unbroken chain that will be repeated.
For the killer, we decided to slightly distort the voice and give it a cathedral environment making it come across as somewhat echoey. This was done in order to have the killer seem like they're trying to get into your mind, or maybe even unwittingly have you remember them. It gives the voice a slightly surreal feel to it, giving the idea that perhaps the trailer was all just a montage in his mind.
The fact that we also have the killer speaking to the audience also adds on to the uncomfortable feeling and anxiety of the audience, this adds to this as the killer is seen as disturbed and childish as he's talking about murder but in a playful manner adds to this disturbed feeling given off from this character as it is seen by him as a casual thing to do and that he see's no wrong in what he is doing. The fact that it is only the killer talking and that it is direct is also there to engage the audience even more.
