It Follows:
The trailer shows what looks like an innocent girl getting ready to go out with someone she seems to like. She seems very vulnerable. This is good as she is a young blonde girl, which is the ideal profile for a horror film victim. The plot is slowly revealed through the trailer but not completely. This makes the suspense build through the trailer as you do not know what is happening and why. The music and setting for the trailer is very fitting to the film plot.
Sinister 2:
The Sinister trailer sees the start being what looks to be an old part of a film. The old film seems to be a horror film and is at quite a climaxed scene. The film is then cut off by a woman walking past the TV on which it was playing on. This shows us the start of the film is not the actual setting for the Sinister plot itself. The trailer focuses mainly on the children, we can infer from the first film what is going to happen as the children are also the main aspect of the first film too. The trailer is completely dark and for the start of the trailer, the children are walking around casting their shadows around the house. The first jump scare is of the evil character himself as he stands in a hallway in front of a young child.Theres an off kilter shot showing that this character is evil and bad, the music also reflects this as it is quite a repulsive nasty sound. There are shots between the film titles that refer to the background story from the first film and explain what is going on and what the threat to the new family may be. You see the children watching all the videos of the families being killed by the children. At the end after you see all the events the family is about to go through there is a video tape that burns up and shows the full title for the film.
Insidious:
This trailer opens with sad dramatic music and a teenage girl telling the viewers that her mum died a year and a half ago. She tries to contact her by calling out. She was then warned that if she does that that "others" can hear her. After that calling the girl experience "others". She was attacked by the "others" and was put in hospital because of it. She returns home and the atmosphere gets darker. The woman says "This entity is very dangerous." The woman tries to save the teenage girl by confronting the entity. It gets violent and the music goes crazy supporting the violent atmosphere.
Unfriended:
At the beginning of this trailer there are short clips of happy memories accompanied with happy music then 25 seconds in the happy and innocent feeling goes away when there are more explicit images and clips coming on screen, most of this girl. Then you see this girl commit suicide because of the bullying she received as a result of the explicit images and clips online. An unknown caller joins a Skype call of teenagers and they panic then one by one each of them dies. It is the ghost of the girl who committed suicide. The moral of this trailer is to be safe online because once you post something you are not under control of it anymore.
Conclusion
In conclusion, these trailers appear to use several main themes throughout, namely the use of a female main character and building up suspension by slowly speeding things up and then dropping back to the original speed. The use of a female character as a main protagonist is used in order to give the character of a viewpoint most often seen as physically inferior and therefore a good victim for a horror film. The use of building up suspension in a trailer will hype up the audience getting them ready to be scared by a jumpscare or the stinger scene. Together, these create a classic feel and are often the two best applied tropes in horror if not the most generic.
The main protagonist is called a Final Girl. She is typically a brunette and the innocent one. She avoids the use of bad influences like drugs and is usually clothed modestly to reflect her innocence. She is also featured prominently in trailer, with the killer taking second in most screen time. She shows fear, but unlike anyone else shows enough intelligence and bravery to triumph in the movie. Therefore, using a female protagonist like Georgina will be a good idea.
The use of the build-up in a trailer is suspenseful because of how slow it starts off. The audience expects something to happen and wants it to happen.
